Planning your tunnel safety system
Safety in tunnel construction is non-negotiable – but it must also be feasible.
Every tunnel construction project requires a well-thought-out escape and rescue concept, which is usually based on the specifications of the client. We accompany you in the creation, testing and optimization of your escape and rescue concept - with a clear focus on the safety of all employees on the construction site.
In doing so, we make targeted use of our many years of project experience: Not every requirement of the client is technically sensible or economically proportionate. Where requirements cannot be implemented in practice or more efficient alternatives exist, we work with you to develop a solution that meets both the normative requirements and the real conditions of the construction site – and saves costs in the process.
Coordination, tendering and implementation
A mature concept alone is not enough – it must also be supported. Coordination with the client and the responsible security authorities is a decisive step that requires professional persuasiveness and diplomatic skills – especially where the optimised concept deviates from the original specifications. We accompany you in this process, conduct the necessary coordination discussions and represent your solution to all parties involved in a technically sound manner.
At least as important is a carefully prepared tender. A precise, complete service description for the tunnel communication and safety system creates the basis for comparable offers, proper awarding of contracts – and significantly minimizes the potential for conflict during subsequent implementation. Normative foundations and current standards
The normative landscape for safety systems on underground construction sites has recently developed significantly. In November 2025, the German Committee for Underground Construction (DAUB) published a fundamentally revised recommendation on emergency management for accident, fire and project-specific risks on underground construction sites. For the first time, the document provides a comprehensive, structured planning basis for tunnel safety systems and thus sets a new reference standard for the industry.
We recommend the consistent application of this guideline on all projects – and are already implementing this in a binding manner in our own consulting practice: All our security concepts are developed on the basis of this current DAUB recommendation. In this way, we ensure that your planning corresponds to the state of the art and withstands official scrutiny.
